Why We Ride: Liz Crane

Thursday, May 2nd, 2013

Liz Crane is part of Team First Source and will be raising funds and riding in this year’s Ride For Missing Children. Here’s why Liz decides to ride:

Liz Crane of Team First Source

“I have been participating in the Ride for three years, and each time it is more meaningful. The first time I rode into a school, when I saw and heard the kids cheering, the school bands playing and the banners flying, I thought, why are they doing this for us? We are doing this for them!

After all the hard work of training, fundraising and riding 100 or so miles, knowing the purpose of why we ride and spread awareness of our mission really brings out so many emotions that day, but when I see those precious kids, I cry every time!”

Throughout the year First Source contributes our time and financial resources to many worthy causes. This season we make a special appeal for the Ride For Missing Children-CNY, an annual 90+/- mile bicycle journey to raise funds and awareness for the plight of missing and exploited children. We are proud to be the Corporate Luminary Sponsor again, and equally proud that we have 8 Riders and 5 volunteers from Team First Source among the hundreds that will ride and volunteer this year. Learn more about the Ride, other riders and how we help to bring missing children home here.

Brian Williams Receives the Go Red Power of You Award

Wednesday, May 1st, 2013

brianThe American Heart Association has again partnered with Excellus BlueCross BlueShield to recognize an individual whom over the past year has made positive changes and significant steps towards living a healthier life.  No change is too small and every accomplishment is significant to be celebrated!

This year our own Brian Williams was the recipient of the Go Red Power of You award for beginning and maintaining a healthier lifestyle. Brian has stuck to a great workout regiment at a local gym and also has become more conscious of his diet. That combination of exercise and sticking to eating healthier foods has had a positive impact on both his health and is an example for others to follow.

Brian was recognized at today’s Go Red Luncheon and we want to extend our congratulations as well!

We’re proud to be a supporter of the Ride For Missing Children and also to share some of the stories of those who participate in this wonderful event. In this short video, Cathy shares a little-know statistic in how missing children are recovered, and the good your donations can accomplish. Funds from the Ride for Missing Children go toward posters and other materials needed in the search for missing kids.

Young Entrepreneurs in the Mohawk Valley and the YEA Investment Challenge

Monday, April 29th, 2013

doviRecently I had the privilege of judging a talented group of young entrepreneurs as part of the YEA Investors panel. The YEA investors Panel is a group of Business Leaders that had the opportunity to listen, judge and “invest” in young entrepreneurs and their businesses. These individuals take a full academic course designed to teach them how to take a business from idea to operation, ultimately presenting these businesses to a group of ‘investors’. Let me tell you… I was blown away with the creativity, passion and professionalism in each of these young individuals…

Two of the business concepts that caught my eye were MOTTO, as it was a business designed to get youth involved in volunteering, and also Stellar Students which had a focus on tutoring not only children but parents as well. For me it was all about the idea and passion. You cannot have one without the other, so I was looking at both to see if the idea could make it and if the entrepreneur had enough passion to make it a success.

Yasmine Mohamed’s business concept, Balloonies-which makes creative, unique and fun balloon gifts was awarded a $1000.00 investment from the panel and a full presidential scholarship to MVCC. Her business idea also finished in the top two in the Rochester regional competition and she’ll now be moving on to present to the national competition in Washington DC.

These young individuals are the future of the Mohawk Valley, and they need to be able to take their idea and make it a reality… That is what drives economic growth in our area, great ideas and passion for those ideas… As young individuals they are getting head start on that process through the YEA program.

Go Red Corporate Challenge Update

Thursday, April 18th, 2013

With the Go Red Corporate Challenge entering its final weeks, we wanted to catch up with some of our First Source staff members who have been setting healthy eating habits, exercising more, and tracking their results. Today, we’re checking in with Michael Orsomarso about what he’s learned.

goredMike“So far the Challenge has taught me a lot about my personal eating/health habits.  While I thought I was eating healthy for a long time prior to beginning the Challenge, I learned that my mentality of what exactly “healthy” meant was a little skewed.  I have since changed my eating habits to incorporate more natural and truly healthy foods instead of what I was eating before:  Greek Yogurt with Kashi vs. Regular Lowfat Yogurt with Special K, baby spinach and peppers with eggs vs. turkey bacon with eggs, etc.  While whole wheat bread may be good for you, there are better alternatives and differences from one brand to another, such as the amount of sugar in the loaf.  One brand of “whole wheat” bread may have more added sugar and high fructose corn syrup than another.  I compare labels and make sure I know what most of the ingredients are, and watch for ones that I can’t even pronounce.  Overall, the Challenge so far has definitely forced me to take a double-look at my eating habits and the foods that I eat.  This is definitely something and a standard that I will hold myself to even after the Challenge has officially ended.”
