Jessie Sherman talks about her involvement with the Go Red Corporate Challenge

Jessie Sherman

Why did you sign up for the Challenge?

For years, only a handful of times, I would feel my heart rate speed up.
It would come at random times and without warning. I later learned these were heart palpitations. They would only last a couple minutes and I always just assumed it was an anxiety or panic attack. I had never
spoken to my doctor about it since it was so infrequent. In November
of 2012, I was actually hospitalized because of the heart palpitations
with my heart rate peaking at 235 (normal heart rate is between 60-100).

I was diagnosed with Supra Ventricular Tachycardia, or SVT. This is a heart arrhythmia where the heart beats at a very rapid pace. While this is not a life threatening condition at my current age of 25, as I get older and things don’t work the same, it could create a whirl wind of health problems. After being on prescriptions for months, two cardiologists recommended having a procedure done called a catheter ablation. With this, catheters with heated tips cauterize, or burn, the affected tissue that causes the palpitations. I actually had the surgery March 12th and I have never felt better! I signed up for the challenge because more than ever, I feel like I am an advocate, being a woman with a heart condition. I think it is extremely important for women to have regular check-ups and know that anything to do with the heart is not
minor!

What do you plan to focus on in the 8 week period?
The 8 week challenge for me is just a chance to get healthy – to eat right and to exercise as often as possible. With the surgery being the second week into the challenge, this is a little difficult at the moment but I cannot wait to get back on the saddle. My co-workers have noticed my clothes fitting a little bigger which is a huge compliment to me!

What do you hope to accomplish?
At the end of the challenge, I hope to just feel better about myself overall. I wouldn’t mind going down in my weight, but how much I weigh doesn’t matter nearly as much to me as how I feel day to day and in my own skin.

Alisa Longo talks about the Go Red Corporate Challenge

Alisa Longo, First Source Member Service Representative

Our Member Service Representative Alisa Longo sits down to talk about what the Go Red Corporate Challenge means to her, as well as what her expectations are for the next eight weeks and beyond.

Why did you sign up for the Challenge?
I Signed up for the challenge so I really had motivation
to push myself to start eating a little better and also to motivate
myself to go to the gym every single day. Now that our whole branch
is a part of the challenge we all motivate each other so that’s really helpful.

What do you plan to focus on in the next 8 weeks?
During this 8 weeks I plan to focus mostly on what I eat. We constantly
have fruit in the branch (and I love fruit!) so I have been eating at least 3
servings of fruit every day. Also, vegetables were never a big part of my daily
diet, but when I see it written down on paper I looked at it and I was like wow,
I really need more vegetables in my diet! I am also focusing on drinking a lot
of water, I constantly have a cup with me all day long and sometimes I add a
little lemon to it. Also, going to the gym has always been a part of my daily
routine, but every now and then I have my lazy days, or even lazy weeks…
tracking this on paper for anyone to see is good motivation to really force
myself to get there every day, even after my longest days.

What do you hope to accomplish?
After this challenge is over what I hope to accomplish is to start being
more conscious of the food I am eating every day, and make sure that my body
is getting everything it needs to be as healthy as possible. I am hoping to turn
this challenge into more than a competition, I hope to turn this into a lifestyle.
And I am very happy with the results I’ve been seeing from going to the gym every day, so I’m going to do my best to keep that up!

Why did you sign up for the Challenge?
I signed up for the Challenge to help motivate others to be healthier.  I feel that I live a very healthy life style, and would like to motivate others to make healthier decisions.

What do you plan to focus on in the next 8 weeks?
What I plan to focus on is just to continue to make sure I am eating well, getting at least 20 minutes (but usually more) of vigorous exercise each day, and drinking plenty of water.

What do you hope to accomplish?
A more defined core.  With the challenge I started to do P90X again.  I’ve always maintained a work out; however, last year when we did the corporate challenge it really helped me to be motivated to change my eating and work out patterns.  When the challenge started last year I did P90X (which is 13 weeks, so I did it even after we were done).  I then moved on to Insanity.

Staring the challenge last year  really made me to be aware of what I was eating.  I never was one to really care, I would just eat what I liked.  Now I’ve started to really read labels and tried not to consume anything that didn’t look like food.  When I can I try to purchase organic food, and I’ve almost completely cut out meat from my diet, substituting vegetarian alternatives.  Last summer my wife and I started hitting up local farmers markets for local organic produce.  I feel that now that I am aware of what I am eating; I tend to have more energy, I fell great most of the time, and it’s easier on the wallet.

Why did you sign up for the Challenge?

I signed up for the Challenge for a number of reasons. First, Heart Disease has unfortunately affected almost every member of my family. It is very important to me to stay healthy and “know your numbers” because of my family history. The Challenge forces me to keep track of everything that I eat, drink and do. Eating healthy and exercising are the key pieces to having a better lifestyle and getting a grip on your Simple 7 factors. When it comes to food, I have the willpower to only say “yes” to temptations. During the Challenge, it really helps me to have other co-workers trying to reach the same goals and being conscientious of what we are eating and doing. Having a good support system is, for me, a key to success.

What do you plan to focus on in the next 8 weeks?

In the next 8 weeks, I plan to focus on getting more active and keeping track of exactly what I’m eating. When I took the Simple 7 assessment, it is recommended to do 150 minutes of moderate or 75 minutes of vigorous exercise per week. I have made this my goal and have made a schedule for myself to complete it. A recommendation from the assessment was to add 10 minutes every time to what I currently do now, which really adds up at the end of the week without making it seem much more difficult. Secondly, I am going to eat healthier by keeping track of everything I eat. Writing everything down really is an eye opener and really shows you how much a little cheat here or there adds up to.

What do you hope to accomplish?

I hope to eat healthier and commit to a more aggressive exercise and workout schedule. While I thought that I was already eating enough whole grains, fruits and vegetables, I really wasn’t. Now that I know my goals and I have a support system here at work, I know that I will be able to improve my score and be healthier overall.
