What a Ride: Lori Nichols’ 1st Ride For Missing Children

Tuesday, April 19th, 2011

First Source Federal Credit Union is a proud supporter and Luminary Sponsor for The Ride For Missing Children. We’d like to share some of the thoughts from our team members, whether they are first time riders or veterans, about what this event means to them.

What does this 100 mile Ride mean to you?

When I was first asked to participate in the ride, I wanted to immediately say yes but was still hesitant because I didn’t have a road bike nor did I think I could accomplish riding 94 miles!!! After very encouraging words from the First Source Riders in 2010, I was hooked and filled with excitement. Attending the pre-ride monthly meetings can be emotional yet so inspiring and uplifting. You realize how your efforts in fund-raising for this cause really pay off when you hear that a child has been recovered and it was because someone spotted a missing child poster. I am a mother of two beautiful children and could not imagine my life without them. I want to keep them safe and make other children’s lives safer. One of my favorite poems is the following: A hundred years from now it will not matter what my bank account was, the sort of house I lived in, or the kind of car I drove…but the world may be different because I was important in the life of a CHILD.” This sums it up perfectly, I want to make a difference.

As a first time rider, what words describe how you are feeling about the big day?

I am really looking forward to the ride…..the words I would use to describe my feelings would be: Inspired, Nervous, Proud, Excited and Emotional. From what I hear, the children at the school stops are filled with energy and very excited to see all of the riders…this is what’s going to keep me going until the finish line.

How are you doing on the training rides?

I attended my first training ride this past weekend and completed 15.5 of the 18 miles. I did fall and got a little banged up but once I got myself back together, I got back on my bike and continued the ride to the end. I was feeling embarrassed but everyone kept encouraging me along the way and shepherds were riding alongside me to guide me with my shifting, etc. The more I ride, the more comfortable I feel and am looking forward to the upcoming practice rides.

Go Red Corporate Challenge

Tuesday, April 19th, 2011

First Source is proud to participate in the Go Red Corporate Challenge-an eight-week workplace wellness challenge that kicked off March 7th. We’ve been educating our employees with wellness tips, providing healthy snack options in our branches,  and participating in activities designed to keep ourselves on the path towards a healthier lifestyle. Some of these activities have included group workouts like Zumba and Bootcamp classes as well as a mall walking group. We’re very proud of what our team has accomplished and are looking forward to sharing the official results of the challenge on May 4 at the AHA’s Go Red for Women Luncheon.

The Titanic Experience

Tuesday, April 12th, 2011

On Thursday, April 14th, First Source will be sponsoring The Titanic Experience at the Stanley Theater. It will be an evening full of food, fun, games and more. As part of the event, guests will be receiving ‘funny money’ that can be used at the casino tables. Want to win even more?

On each bill you’ll see a QR code that can be scanned with any smartphone such as an iPhone, Blackberry or Android device. To see if you’re a winner, you’ll just need an app for your smartphone such as ScanLife, or any other QR reader that is available for your smartphone.

Use your phone’s camera to scan the code and find out if you’re a winner! If you are (or want us to check your bills for you), simply bring them to the First Source booth at the event and we can help. Winning bills will receive an extra $500 of funny money.

We’re looking forward to a great event and are excited to see many of you there. We’re also giving away extra ‘funny money’ on our Facebook page between now and Thursday so be sure to ‘Like’ us to participate!

New Fees to Consumers?

Friday, April 8th, 2011

Mike Parsons, President and CEO of First Source Federal Credit Union, talks about a crucial new bill passed by Congress that may threaten our ability to use debit cards without fees. Retailers lobbied to have the costs of using debit cards taken from them and passed on to financial institutions, who will have to pass them on to consumers. His call to action: contact Senators Chuck Schumer and Kirsten Gillibrand (U.S. Capitol switchboard 202-224-3121) to support Bill 575, which delays implementing the plan until the effects are studied properly.
