What a Ride: Tanya Keller reflects on The Ride For Missing Children

Tuesday, May 25th, 2010

Now that The Ride For Missing Children has ended, we’re speaking with some of the riders from Team First Source about their experience. Here’s what Tanya Keller had to say:

Describe Your ride experience in one word:

What did you take away from Friday’s ride?
An overwhelming feeling of hope for every child that has not been brought home yet, inspiration in witnessing the unbelievable courage that these families display, and knowing for a fact that our part in this is most definitely going to make a difference in keeping our children safe.

What missing child did you ride for and do you know their story?
Mark William Seelman, he went missing in 1990, at the age of 18 from Remsen, NY. He would be the same age as me today, 36 years old.

What was your favorite part of the day?
The first school we visited, because as a first time rider, I really had no idea what to expect and the welcome was absolutely mind-blowing.

Do you plan on riding next year and would you recommend the ride to others?
Absolutely and most definitely, without a doubt. They got me….hook, line, and sinker! If there is ever a time when I am not physically able to ride, I know this event will always be a part of my life and I will contribute to it in any way that I can, either through donations or volunteering.

Overdraft Protection: cutting through the confusion

Thursday, May 13th, 2010

You may have received a notice in the mail or email from us (or perhaps another financial institution) asking you to confirm your desire to continue your overdraft protection on your checking account; a service that we call Member Reserve. While a recent federal requirement regarding overdraft protection services was a big story in the financial news, it may have caught you off guard. We’ve noticed that some letters and emails are clear, and communication from some financial institutions appear to be a bit deceptive.

What’s it all about? Simply put, the federal government has mandated that all financial institutions ask their account holders to confirm that they want overdraft protection, (which provides protection if you inadvertently overdraw your account through either of these services). We always keep our Members’ best interests in mind, so we provide this courtesy service to members who qualify. While there is a nominal fee for us to cover any overdrafts ($25 for each occurrence), it costs you less than you would typically be charged if your check (or debit) bounced, and you’re also saved any extra cost, inconvenience or embarrassment it would have caused you. If you decide at some point in the future to cancel this service then you may revoke your opt-in at that time.

We’ve offered Member Reserve for some time as a standard service, but a number of banks have tried to frame this as a “new” service that you may be charged an ongoing fee for, and have tried to reel in new account holders this way. We don’t believe in deceptive practices to attract new Members—we know openness is a much better way to foster a strong relationship with you.

Rest assured, your First Source Member Reserve service will be uninterrupted once you complete the simple “opt-in” process. If you have any questions about Member Reserve or aren’t sure how to follow-up on our earlier letter, you can easily opt-in or get more information here, or at any First Source branch.

Going Red for a Great Cause

Monday, May 10th, 2010

Kristy Nole, AVP Marketing & Communications, served as this year’s Ambassador for the American Heart Association of the Mohawk Valley’s Go Red for Women campaign. First Source was proud to serve as the Presenting Sponsor for this amazing organization that brings heart disease education and prevention information to women in our area.

As Ambassador, Kristy spoke at this year’s Go Red end of campaign luncheon. The transcript of her words is below. We hope they inspire you and our larger community to continue to do everything you can for this great cause. We are very proud of the AHA, and of Kristy, and we look forward to reducing heart disease among our friends and neighbors.

Good afternoon.

Fact: Heart disease is the number one killer of women.
Fact: 43 million American women are living with cardiovascular disease.
Fact: First Source Federal Credit Union is taking an active role in helping to stop this trend!

As a devoted supporter of the American Heart Association of the Mohawk Valley, we are constantly asking what more we can do to raise awareness and help fight the spread of heart disease.

This year First Source is proud to serve as the Presenting Sponsor of Go Red for Women.
In addition to providing solutions to improve your financial life, we at First Source are committed to the overall well-being of those we serve. Since we are locally owned and operated, it gives us great pride to be able to give back to the communities that make us who we are.

Sponsorship of the education and prevention of heart disease is just one of the many ways we do so.

We often use a quote by Margaret Mead as a source of inspiration in our community giveback.
“Never doubt that a small group of thoughtful people can change the world. Indeed it’s the only thing that ever has.”

We are honored to partner with such a worthy organization and to be a part of such an amazing community.

Prevention is about choices. First Source chooses to make a difference.

In the fight against heart disease, may this luncheon represent a new beginning rather than a culmination.

Thank you for joining us in the fight.

First Source Committed to Go Red For Women

“Prevention is about choices. First Source chooses to make a difference.”
